Lost Art of Handwritten Thank You Notes

For many, summer is a time of transition: weddings, graduations, job interviews. And that means it's also a season for thank-you notes. In today's world, e-mail has replaced snail mail as the preferred mode for much communication. But etiquette expert Peggy Post and Judy Gilbert, Google's director of staffing programs, both agree that a handwritten note is still the best way to say "thank you."

A thank-you note is an elegant and inexpensive way to show appreciation to someone who has assisted you in some fashion and also is a stellar way to improve a potential business contact. Here are a few common occasions where a thank-you note is appropriate.,

Whenever you receive a gift, send a thank-you note. If someone sends you a gift (that’s more than just a product promotion), this is a great opportunity for such a note. This is particularly true with Christmas and other personal gift-giving occasions, though for personal notes, you should use blank, hand-written notes.

Whenever you interview for a job, send a thank-you note. This is true whether or not the interview went well; in either event, you should show appreciation. Why? Even in the worst case scenario, it taught you some things about yourself.

Whenever someone does something for you that is helpful for either your personal or professional life, send a thank-you note. I find these are the most powerful ones in terms of building a network of people that you can regularly connect with. I’m not typically the most social person, so when I am able to make a significant contact with a person, I make sure to follow up, because those individuals may eventually become your co-workers, your clients, or potentially your friends.

7 Secrets to a Great Toast!

  1. Don't be long-winded.
  2. Stand to give a toast; remain seated to receive one.
  3. Prepare ahead of time – know what you're going to say.
  4. Mention those you're toasting by name, your relationship to them and a thought about their future good fortune.
  5. Add witty and personal remembrances wherever possible.
  6. Speak slowly and loudly enough for all guests to hear.
  7. Don't forget to cap off your toast with a hearty "Cheers!"

Some Helpful Hints ~

Be comfortable
Give a toast in a way that is most comfortable to you, even if it means you remain seated.

Don't cross messages
It's easy to get side tracked when giving a toast. Remaining on topic keeps any potentially embarrassing situations to a minimum.

Be prepared
If you are attending an event where it is likely you will be called on, it is a good idea to have a few short toasts memorized.

When quoting, be sure to get it right
Be sure to check the context of your toast if it is quoted from a known poem or prose of work. A few lines from a poem may sound nice individually, but may have a completely different meaning when the poem is read as a whole.
